Transmission replacement cost3/21/2024 ![]() ![]() They quoted $3800 installed for a used transmission with 107k miles on it. I kind of feel like they just saw it wouldn’t shift and immediately went to “replace the transmission”. Unfortunately I don’t know what the trouble code was. I don’t really know how much diagnostics they did or if they are just trying to sell me one. Not a transmission specialist but a place that does transmission work. I lost power and now the van appears to be in limp mode. If you're capable of pulling and rebuilding your own valvebody, then you're capable of pulling the unit and the front pump.Last night I was driving and the check engine light came on. Then you pull the trans to service it if that's your problem. The car is now at 186k and drives like it’s brand new. ![]() Also I’m located in the Tampa Florida area. Either way done and over with now, but the final bill was $6200.00. At the time I wasn’t as knowledgeable about this specific bmw and just needed it fixed so I’m sure I paid way to much. Just to give you some info on my experience, I have a 2007 335i and at 150k had the trans rebuilt with a 1 year warranty from aamco. I am wondering what the costs of repair or replacement with refurbished units run in order to know what I might face in terms of a high repair bill if I stay with the car for say at least three more years with and expected 45k miles driven in that period. I find my indecision rests on the matter of the automatic transmission (I have driven a stick other than this car for 40 years, partially for this reason). We have owned the 328i since new and it has been kept up with and taken care of well. I will then drive my E10 and my wife who is returning her lease will need a daily driver will either go back into the E90 or lease a VW again. I am at a crossroads due to a leased car in the family being given back to the dealer. I drive a 2009 328i two wheel drive with 140k miles on it. This Fast Learn Adapts procedure would be great to run in order to rule out issues with adaptations, but I have yet to find software or a tool to do it. Now, I think my transmission was a couple quarts low on fluid for a period of time, so my thinking is perhaps clutches overheated and there is some permanent damage. I actually ended up with a 2-3 shift flare that I don’t recall being there before. The Zip Kit (sans new PR valve) improved my 2-1 jerk a bit, but frankly I didn’t notice any massive improvements. I’d be open to replacing the VB if it solved my shifting woes, but I’m not sure it will. ![]() Given I did not want to drop the transmission to install the replacement valve, I settled with simply replacing all the parts and seals that I could get at in the VB alone. I ask because my understanding from having researched and installed a Zip Kit is that the PR valve is often one of the most worn items. What about the fact the PR valve is accessible/replaceable only by removing the pump? Service it with new dexron6 and a filter, then roll on. A new valve body makes them shift like new for 5-800 dollars. Most transmission problems these days are related to valve body wear. If it needs rebuilt it's not any worse than any other car, but the hard parts are actually pretty good. But if you could humor me, have you heard any prices on what people pay for a refurbished unit, installed - not from the BMW dealership but a reputable shop? I am leaning towards staying with it and draining the fluid from removing the pain and reinstalling a new filter, as the best financial bet over a new lease. I can't really tell you if it my neurosis or not, lol. It currently strikes me as 'a little tired in its shifting' at low rpm's and speeds. Consider a fluid and filter change, or at the very least make sure there are no leaks. If your tranny is currently working fine then I wouldn’t worry. both the ZF and GM units (yours would be ZF). The transmissions in these cars are very reliable. Infinitely less expensive than a rebuild or replacement. If you’re experiencing shift issues, it may be possible to simply replace solenoids in the valve body to solve them. Is your question purely hypothetical, as in, “if the transmission fails, what would it cost to fix?” Or are you experiencing issues right now? ![]()
